David McCullough, master writer, speaker and historian, won
his second Pulitzer Prize for “John Adams”. It is a fascinating
book about a man who has largely been forgotten for his role in
bringing about the United States of America.
It was Thomas Jefferson who wrote the Declaration of
Independence. It was George Washington who led the colonies to
victory. But it was John Adams who was the mastermind behind
the American Revolution.
Adams was not fond of politics. But that feeling was
overshadowed by his love of country, family and God. He and his
beloved Abigail endured years of separation as he tirelessly
served to bring about the freedom of a new nation.
McCullough details the history of the signing of the
Declaration of Independence, George Washington’s presidency and
the turbulent years of Adam’s presidency. McCullough highlights
Adams as a determined, brilliant and stubborn politician who
believed that the purpose of government was to serve and bless
the people.
If you read this book and have the opportunity to travel to
Washington, D.C. you’ll wonder, as I did, why there are no
significant monuments to honor this amazing patriot, statesman,
and president. This book helped me develop a deep appreciation
for one of the most important and outstanding Americans who
ever lived.
